Visitors Visa

This visa will allow you to visit the UK for a period of up to 6 months.

Introduction

What is a Visitors Visa?

A Visitor Visa (also known as a Standard Visitor Visa) allows individuals to come to the UK for a short stay of up to 6 months for specific permitted activities such as tourism, visiting family, attending business meetings, receiving medical treatment, or completing certain short‑term study courses.

This visa is intended for people who do not plan to live in the UK permanently and who will leave the UK at the end of their visit.

We advise clients that a Visitor Visa is single‑entry in practice and should not be used to make multiple trips within the 6‑month period. Each visit must genuinely meet the requirements of the immigration rules, and repeated travel can raise concerns about your true intentions.

A Visitor Visa is one of the most challenging visa categories to obtain, as the evidence threshold is very high. Applicants must clearly demonstrate their intention to return home, their financial stability, and the genuine purpose of their visit. Because of this, we strongly recommend seeking professional advice and guidance before applying.

If you are considering a Visitor Visa application, please contact us as we would be happy to support you on your immigration journey.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sponsor a visitor to the UK?

If you are inviting someone to come to the UK to visit you, you will be named as the sponsor on their application. An invitation letter will need to be produced as well as any supporting documents that can aid the Home Office in their understanding of the applicant’s trip to the UK. As the sponsor you will be responsible for the applicant while they are in the UK.

What AM I allowed to do on a Visitors Visa?

If your Visitors Visa is accepted, whilst in the UK you CAN:

  • Visit family and friends
  • Come for a holiday or tourism
  • Attend business meetings, conferences, or events
  • Receive private medical treatment
  • Study a short course (up to 6 months)
  • Sit an exam or attend an interview
  • Take part in permitted academic or creative activities

What am I NOT allowed to do on a Visitors Visa?

If your Visitors Visa is accepted, whilst in the UK you CANNOT:

  • Work or take employment
  • Live in the UK long-term
  • Claim or access any public funds
  • Marry or register a civil partnership (unless you apply for a Marriage Visitors Visa)
Will I be able to use any NHS services?

Yes, however you will need to pay your NHS bill. Otherwise if this bill is left outstanding, it may affect any of your future applications to come to the UK.

What happens if I overstay my Visitors visa?

From the time that your visa expires you will have a 30-day voluntary period in which you can return to your home country. After this 30-day period you could be deported and if so, you could be banned from re-entering the UK for 1-10 years.

We advise all our clients to know the date that their visa expires with complete certainty, and always have plans to exit the country well before this date. That way there is never any reason to be worried about deportation and as a result sanctions.
