Child Registration

Registering a child under the age of 18 as a British Citizen upon meeting the requirements.

Introduction

What is a Child Registration Application?

A Child Registration Application is the process of applying for a child under the age of 18 to be recognised as a British citizen.

Unlike adults, who usually become British citizens through naturalisation, children are registered as citizens under specific routes set out in the British Nationality Act 1981.

Registration is often the correct route when a child is not automatically British at birth, but their circumstances mean they are entitled to, or may be granted, British citizenship. This can include situations such as:

  • A child born in the UK whose parent later becomes settled or a British citizen.
  • A child born abroad to a parent who is British by descent, where automatic citizenship cannot be passed on.
  • A child who has lived in the UK for a number of years and may qualify under a discretionary route.
  • Children whose circumstances mean registration would be in their best interests.

To make this application the Home Office requires detailed evidence about the child, their parents, and their immigration or residence history. The rules can be complex, and the strength of the application often depends on how clearly the case is presented.

Child registration routes can be confusing, and eligibility often depends on very specific details. At Migration Advice Services, we assess your child’s circumstances, identify the correct route, and prepare a strong, well‑supported application to maximise the chances of success. We ensure the process is clear, smooth, and handled with the highest care and consideration.

Eligibility

Who is Eligible for a Child Registration Application?

A Child Registration Application is available to children under the age of 18 who are not automatically British at birth but may be entitled to, or considered for, British citizenship under the British Nationality Act 1981. Eligibility depends on the child’s circumstances, their parents’ status, and where the child was born.

Children may be eligible to register as British citizens under several routes. Some routes give a child a legal entitlement to be registered, while others rely on Home Office discretion, meaning the application must be carefully prepared to demonstrate the child’s connection to the UK and why registration is appropriate.

Determining eligibility for child registration can be complex, and the success of the application often depends on how clearly the case is presented. At Migration Advice Services, we assess your child’s circumstances in detail, identify the correct route, and prepare a strong, well‑supported application to maximise the chances of approval.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between naturalisation and registration?

In both situations you are making an application to acquire your British Citizenship.

The difference between the two is normally that naturalisation is the term used for an adult and registration is the term used for a child.

There is an exception to the above, which is Adult Registration. Adult Registration is a route to British Citizenship available to certain adults who have a specific legal entitlement to be registered as British Citizens. This is a complicated area of immigration law, if you feel you may fall under this area of law please contact us to be assessed.

How long does the process of registration take?

The service standard on receiving your decision is usually within a 6 month period.

However, the Home Office may take longer to consider your application if further information is required or during busy periods.

Can I apply for a British passport without registering?

Some children may be eligible to apply for a British passport straight away depending on their parentage and circumstances.

Our first step is always to confirm whether the child is automatically British before proceeding with any registration application.

Do I need to do life in the UK test for registration?

No, there is no requirement for you to have completed the Life in the UK test for these applications.
