Adult Naturalisation

Applying to naturalise as a British Citizen upon meeting the requirements.

Introduction

What is a Adult Naturalisation?

Adult naturalisation is the process through which an eligible adult can apply to become a British citizen.

Most applicants will be seeking naturalisation after living in the UK for a qualifying period, usually five years. Applicants will need to meet the strict residence, good character, and English language requirements set by the Home Office.

For many people, naturalisation represents the final step in securing their future in the UK. It provides the right to hold a British passport, full access to public services, and the security of knowing you can live, work, and build your life here without immigration restrictions.

However, the naturalisation process can be complex. Applicants must demonstrate continuous lawful residence, meet the physical presence rules, pass the Life in the UK Test, and provide detailed supporting evidence. Even small errors or missing documents can lead to delays or refusals.

At Migration Advice Services, we specialise in guiding clients through every stage of their naturalisation journey. We provide clear, tailored advice, assess your eligibility, prepare your application to the highest standard, and ensure that your evidence meets Home Office expectations. Our goal is to make the process as smooth and stress‑free as possible, giving you confidence in your application and peace of mind throughout.

If you are considering applying for British citizenship, we would be pleased to support you and help you take this important step toward securing your future in the UK.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between being a British Citizen and naturalisation?

With Naturalisation you are applying to acquire your British Citizenship. If you are a British Citizen then you have already hold your British nationality and should only apply for a British passport.

How long does the Home Office take to prosses your Naturalisation application?

The service standard on receiving your decision is usually up to a 6 month period. However, the Home Office may take longer to consider your application if further information is required or during busy periods.

Can I apply for a British Passport if I am in the UK on a visa, or do I need to naturalise first?

No, if you are in the UK on a visa, you cannot apply for a British passport. Only British citizens are eligible to hold a British passport. This means you must first obtain British citizenship, usually through the process of naturalisation, before you can apply for a passport.

If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements for naturalisation or would like support preparing your application, please contact us for an assessment of your case.

Is the Life in the UK Test required for naturalisation?

Yes, it a core requirement to your application unless you are exempt. Contact us for further details about these exceptions and if they would apply to you and your circumstances.
