Ancestry Visa

An entry clearance application when one of your grandparents was born in the UK.

Introduction

What is an Ancenstry Visa?

A UK Ancestry Visa is a visa route available to Commonwealth Citizens and British Overseas Citizens who have a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. It allows eligible applicants to live, work, and study in the UK for up to five years, with a direct pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and eventually British Citizenship.

This visa is designed for individuals who have a genuine ancestral connection to the UK and want to build their life here. It is one of the more flexible UK immigration routes, as it does not require sponsorship, a job offer, or a minimum salary. You simply need to demonstrate that you can maintain yourself in the UK without accessing public funds.

Although the Ancestry Visa is a popular route, the evidence requirements can be high, especially when proving a grandparent’s birth and establishing the family link. At Migration Advice Services, we guide you through the entire process, gather the correct documentation, and prepare a strong application to maximise your chances of success.

If you believe you may qualify for a UK Ancestry Visa, we would be pleased to support you on your immigration journey.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I stay in the UK on an Ancestry Visa?

You will be granted a visa for five years. After completing this 5 year qualifying period, you can then apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) if you meet the requirements.

Once you have successfully obtained ILR, you will then be eligible to apply to become a British Citizen through Naturalisation. After you have Naturalised, you can apply for a British Passport.

What am I allowed to do whilst in the UK?

A UK Ancestry Visa is one of the most flexible immigration routes available. It gives you significant freedom to live your life in the UK without many of the restrictions found in other visa categories.

If you hold an Ancestry Visa, you are allowed to:

  • Live in the UK for up to five years.
  • Work in any job.
  • Study at any UK institution.
  • Bring certain family members with you as dependants.
  • Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after completing five years of residence.
  • Apply for British Citizenship once you have ILR and meet the Naturalisation requirements.

The only key restriction is that you cannot access public funds, meaning you must be able to support yourself financially while in the UK.

Do I need a job offer in order to apply for a UK Ancestry Visa?

No, you do not need to show proof of a secure job offer, only that you have an intention and are taking active steps to obtain employment.
